Last week, Hutton hosted a field management training meeting for all our field leaders. These are semi-annual meetings for project managers, superintendents, project engineers and other team leaders to gather for a day of leadership training. In this session, our team heard from Dan Oblinger about navigating difficult conversations to equip these leaders on being better negotiators with the people they lead. Also covered in this day-long workshop were presentations on safety, QA/QC, warranty issues and a subcontractor panel. Hutton regularly invests in the personal development of each team member. Often, that investment starts at the top and these training meetings help us partner with our leaders to cultivate an attitude of lifelong learning for everyone.

One of Hutton’s guiding principles is to give each Hutton team member the tools to pursue learning in a way that improves their work and their life. In her role, Roxanne McFarland has many responsibilities requiring her to collaborate with various city officials and departments. Her curiosity about that process led her to enroll in the City of Wichita Kansas's Civic Engagement Academy—a hands-on discovery program for citizens to explore civic engagement and general city operations for the purpose of improving overall quality-of-life conditions. After eight sessions, she graduated from this class, earning a Certificate of Civic Leadership through the City of Wichita and the Kansas Leadership Center. Congratulations Roxanne!

Watch this quick tour of the Faith Academy jobsite, only a few months away from being finished. Designed and being built in northwest Wichita, Kan., this 15,000 SF private school will offer high-quality academic opportunities to Wichita-area children and families, with an emphasis on faith-based teaching. Created and shared to us by Aiden Davis for a recent fundraiser, it gives a fun look into where we are in the build.

After a year of carefully deconstructing the Docking Building that stood next to the Kansas State Capitol in Topeka, Kan. for more than 65 years, a new Docking is rising in its place. Made from granite, marble and limestone preserved from the original building, this state building will house state agency offices. Designed by clark | huesemann and PGAV Architects, the building will also include exhibition space, a cafe, a gym, a health clinic and an event center, too. Stay tuned for the finished building coming in 2025.

On Monday, the Wichita community gathered in support around Dr. Prisca Barnes and the Storytime Village, Inc. team, breaking ground on what will be a new early childhood literacy center. This new facility is focused on expanding opportunities for reading, writing and illustrating to Wichita kids. Designed and soon-to-be-built by Hutton, the vision for this space is to be a “village” full of meeting spaces, event rooms, a teaching kitchen and childcare facilities. The designs enhance an existing historic yellow house, adding on to create the appearance of a multi-building village where children can come and expand their love for reading and writing. Congratulations to the Storytime Village team!

Only three years after acquiring, designing and renovating our current Salina office, that team’s growth has necessitated an expansion of the space. Luckily we knew a team that could design and build a new office addition quickly. This is that new space.    This addition offers ample room for the new office needs of our Salina team members, including desk space for the office team and an interiors space for the interior design team. We’re very excited about the expanded capacity of our Salina team to continue working on great new projects for North Central Kansas.

After a car accident caused major damage to the patio of Grow Plant Bar at the intersection of Market and Waterman in Wichita, KS, Hutton Facility Services was hired to install a solution to keep guests safe. It may not look like much, but these handrails are actually a guardrail system made up of stainless steel cables and vertical bollards installed three feet into the ground. Manufactured and installed to very particular specifications, this guardrail system is unique to Wichita and will play an important role in the safety and comfort of Grow guests.

We’re ready to go vertical at the new Fire Station #2 in McPherson, KS! Designed and being built by Hutton, the masonry walls for the service areas and apparatus bays will go up soon.    This fire station will have a mini-museum to house the city’s antique fire engine and other historic artifacts. Soon, steel erectors will come and set the steel for the museum and place the hollow core concrete slabs for the ceiling of the service area. Completing the hollow core concrete slabs and museum steel will make way for the pre-engineered metal building steel on the rest of the building.
